HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS SULTAN NAZRIN MUIZZUDDIN SHAH IBNI ALMARHUM SULTAN AZLAN MUHIBBUDDIN SHAH AL-MAGHFURLAH D.K., D.K.II (Selangor), D.K.S.A, S.P.C.M, S.P.T.S, S.P.M.P. (Perlis), Ph.D (Harvard)

His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Al-Maghfurlah was proclaimed the 35th Sultan of the State of Perak on 29th may 2014. He was born on 27th november 1956 in Penang. He is the eldest son of the late Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Yusuf Izzuddin Shah Ghafarullahu and the Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku Bainun Binti Mohd Ali. HRH holds a B.A. (Hons) degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University, a Master in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University. His research interests are in the area of economic and political development in southeast and northeast Asia, historical national income accounting and economic growth in developing countries. He has written articles and spoken on a wide range of issues including the role of constitutional monarchy in Malaysia, education, Islam, ethnic relations and economic development.

He is currently working on a book on the economic history of Malaysia in the twentieth century. HRH is the President of the Perak Council on Islam and Malay Custom and is also the President of the Perak State Islamic Development Corporation. He has been Pro-Chancellor of University Malaya since 1989. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Malay College, Kuala Kangsar. He was President of the Outward Bound Trust of Malaysia from 1989 to 2002.

HRH Raja Dr Nazrin Shah was actively involved in various sporting bodies. He held the position of President of the Malaysian Hockey Federation (2004-2006) and President of the Perak Amateur Football Association (2000-2006). He was the President of the Perak Rugby Association (1988-1991), President of the Perak Hockey Association (1990-2004) and Chairman of the Yayasan Hoki Malaysia (1992-2005) - a scholarship fund for talented hockey players. He was the Deputy Chairman (Finance) of the organizing committee of the 2002 10th Men's World Cup hockey tournament. On 1 April 2004 HRH was commissioned as Brigadier General in the Malaysian Armed Forces and holds the position of Group Commander in the Royal Engineer Regiment (Rejimen Askar Jurutera DiRaja). HRH Raja Dr Nazrin Shah was conferred an honorary degree of Master of Business Administration by the Cranfield Institute of Technology, United Kingdom (1993), an honorary degree of Doctor of Economics by Soka University, Japan (1999) and an honorary membership of Magdalene College, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom (July 2005).
