20th October 2023 -The Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security (MiDAS) successfully organised MiDAS Talk Series 2/2023 with assistance from the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) at Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
The guest speaker for this series is Professor James Kraska from the U.S. Naval War College. The topic presented was The Newport Manual on the Law of Naval Warfare. The opening remarks was delivered by the Chief Executive of MiDAS, YBhg. Mej Jen Dato' Hj Ya'cob bin Hj Samiran.
Participants of the talk numbered up to 97 consisting of policymakers, practitioners, academicians, and scholars. The presentation consisted of explanations of the chapters within the manual. The question and answer (Q&A) session covered a wide range of issues, including UNCLOS, the South China Sea, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the Israel-Palestine conflict in relation to existing law, as well as what the future expectations are for the manual. After the Q&A, Professor James was presented with a memento of appreciation by the Chief Executive of MiDAS. As the event closed, the Chief Executive of MiDAS delivered his closing remarks, followed by a group photo to commemorate MiDAS Talk 2/2023.
